The ecosystem here in Chicago is so unique, and the community development world is such a strong rich world. I want our community-based organizations like GAGDC to play more of a key strategic role just as our great colleges and universities and health systems have.

It took me many years to be brave enough to speak honestly or put together what I was seeing and to be able to say, “This has social causation, and part of the social causation is structural racism and economic deprivation”… if I’m proud of anything it was to change the narrative around causation.

Joyce Chapman’s vision was aligned with the vision of C3EN, which is to build coalitions of diverse organizations and individuals to fight for social justice. We hope the Joyce Chapman Award will help continue her legacy by facilitating partnerships between researchers and community organizations who can work together to achieve our dream of a just society.

If the issue is money, then let’s figure out a way the city can split the cost with the people, or how both sides can benefit. If the city doesn’t have the money, then teach the people how to fix it so they can fix it themselves. Give them the tools. Then the city can save money, and it creates jobs.

I used to go to the doctor afraid of what I was going to hear–now I go waiting for the results and wanting to hear what they see. That impact for me has impacted my church—for them to see my journey and take on their own. Today I want people to know why they want to be healthy. Everyone has their own why.
